Zahedan (Persian: زاهدان) or Saravan is an Iranian city and the capital of the province of Sistan and Baluchistan.

Zahedan had an estimated population of 580,071 in 2005

Because of subsidies, gas price is very low in Iran, this resulted in high amount of gas trafficking to neighborhood countries, especially to Afghanistan. Government had set up a limited amount for every car in Zahedan to avoid trafficking, so the black market is build! No end of this. Here you see one of the gas sellers....

This little shy boy is selling Nas, a mixture of weed and lime, they wrap a little of that with tissue and put it in the space between lower theeth and lower lip. The lime erodes the mucosa and opens up the capillaries which the weed is readily absorbed, giving some kind of euphoria. Eventually the gums are chewd up by the lime and the lower teeth fall off. I tried it once, it burned all the way down, terrible experience!

This is Shirabad vicinity. It is located NE of Zahedan city. Mostly composed of Afghan immigrants, there is no water supply and other sanitary facilities. Shirabad is the major site of Zahedan's underground activities, you can buy Opium 250 $ per kilo and a machine gun for 30$ !

Iranian lawyer and winner of the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize Shirin Ebadi attends a conference on Islam at Rome's auditorium. One day before the 2007 International Women's Day, Shirin Ebadi called for an end to discrimination against women in Iran, where security forces arrested around 30 women's rights activists on Sunday who were demonstrating outside a courtroom where five fellow campaigners were on trial.
